Along came Jesus of Nazareth. He was born a Jew, as prophesied. He was born in the tribe of Judah, as prophesied. He was born in the city of Bethlehem, as prophesied. He lived a sinless life, as prophesied. And he was brutally and savagely murdered, as prophesied. The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (the “Gospels”) hold the accounts of Jesus’ life and death. They tell of how he healed the sick, raised the dead, and urged people to seek God.
But, even more than that, Jesus was God! Though it is difficult to grasp, Jesus, the “Christ,” was God-incarnate. He was a man, and he was also God. Fully man, fully God. Since he lived a perfect life, he fulfilled the Law and was therefore able to be an adequate substitute for our sins. He stepped in and took the penalty we deserved, and offers salvation to all who will believe and follow him. He was beaten and crucified, but on the third day after his death, he rose from the dead demonstrating that he had conquered sin and “crushed the head” of Satan.
